Typography – Terms Worksheet

Using Internet research and your own knowledge, fill in the blanks below and write a meaning for each word.

Typography Word		Meaning
1	Kerning	Spacing between letters
2	Leading	Vertical space between the lines
3	Type Size / Cap Height	The size of individual letters
4	Ascender	Letters that extend above the line of font
5	Descender	Letters that go below the line
6	Counter	The area of a letter that is entirely or partially enclosed by a letter form or a symbol. This is also known as the space the hole has. Letters containing closed counters include A, B, D, O, P, Q, R, a, b, d, e, g, o, p, and q.
7	X Height	Distance between baseline and mean line of lower case letters
8	Baselines	This is where the letters are placed or “sat” on
9	Type Alignment	Where the text is on the page and where it is from the margins
